Hurricane Helene (Western North Carolina) Waterway Debris Removal

Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, the Western North Carolina Waterway Debris Removal effort became a massive, multi-agency operation aimed at clearing flood-related wreckage from rivers, streams, and floodplains across 16 counties. Led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and supported by state and local agencies, the mission has removed nearly 7.5 million cubic yards of debris—including trees, structural remnants, and sediment—from waterways, rights-of-way, and private properties.

The operation prioritizes environmental sensitivity, with guidelines from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission emphasizing minimal disruption to aquatic habitats and streambanks. Removal focuses on debris posing threats to infrastructure, public safety, or increasing flood risk. The cleanup not only restores water flow and reduces future flood hazards but also supports the reopening of vital outdoor recreation areas like the Pigeon River, which has been heavily altered by the storm.

Hurricane Helene
(Western North Carolina) Private Property and Debris Removal

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, private property debris removal efforts in Ashe and Watauga counties are supported through a specialized program aimed at helping residents and business owners clear storm-related wreckage. In Watauga County, the Private and Commercial Property Debris Removal (PPDR) Program offers free assistance to those without adequate insurance or the ability to move debris to the public right-of-way. This includes not only debris removal but also the demolition of unsafe structures on eligible properties.

Residents apply online or visit designated application centers in Boone and Sugar Grove to request help. These efforts are part of a broader recovery initiative to restore safety, accessibility, and livability to storm-impacted communities in Western North Carolina.
